Fort Lauderdale, Florida

“This photo was taken at the HerSelf First women’s workshop at the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy 2012 Connect Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

There is something quite extraordinary that happens when women come together. Problems-both of the “how do you get marker out of a car seat” and the “this is the way to end all wars” variety-get solved. Connections made, social armor softens as commonalities are explored: “Really? You put Oreos right IN the ice cream container too?” Bonds are formed. And for women who are caregivers, as the women in this photograph are, who care for children with chronic, incurable medical conditions, as these women do, those bonds are more than friendships or even convenient social ties. They are life bridges. “

This photo captures something difficult to put into words. I have a form of muscular dystrophy myself but can walk around but am a bit wobbly. I recently bought a pair of high heels that were on sale even though I knew I couldn’t actually walk anywhere in them. I also like a quote from To Kill A Mockingbird about walking in someone else’s shoes. It is hard for those with MD to walk but it is also hard for those who walk alongside us,especially parents of kids with Duchenne’s. It is a cruel disease. We desperately need a cure!
