Zdzisław Beksiński – Poland

23 May

Zdzisław Beksiński (Polish pronunciation: [ˈzd͡ʑiswaf bɛkˈɕiɲski]; 24 February 1929 – 21 February 2005) was a renowned Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor. Beksiński executed his paintings and drawings either in what he called a ‘Baroque‘ or a ‘Gothic‘ manner. The first style is dominated by representation, with the best-known examples coming from his fantastic realism period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic, nightmarish environment. The second style is more abstract, being dominated by form, and is typified by Beksiński’s later paintings.

Spectacular shot, it’s kind of fun trying to guess the scale! :)

Until that is, we did a bit of googling here and here.

And a BBC slide show with audio discussing the Jain festival that takes place there.

Work In Progress- Leaping Into the Unknown

I’ve been very lax about posting updates lately and I know that is a weakness of mine, but here is something new! I’ve been working on this piece for well over a month but just started the acrylic painting portion last week.

Barefootin’

Barefootin’ in the garden, so Spring must have arrived. While I sketched my feet resting on a stool, Sally sketched me sketching my feet (below). Late afternoon sun was coming from the right and reflecting softly off a wall on the left. I’m learning to love pencil, helped by a move from smudgy 2B to crisp 2H, and the ability to rub out lines is a strange new experience after 2 years of indelible ink!

The Art of Ahn Jun – New York City / South Korea

19 May

From Wikipedia

Ahn Jun (안준) is a South Korean photographer, known primarily for her Self-Portrait series of photographs taken from atop high buildings. She has worked extensively in the United States, particularly in New York, as well as South Korea.

Ahn’s work involves three major projects; Invisible Seascape, Float, and Self-Portrait.

Self-Portrait, the most prominent, is a series of photographs of Ahn on or near the top of skyscrapers, often leaning from a window or seated on a ledge. Some are taken from a first-person perspective, showing her legs dangling into space as she looks down. The project stemmed from a photograph of her feet she took while sitting on the edge of an apartment building while a student at Pratt, and has continued since then. The bulk of the photographs are from New York and Seoul, with some from Hong Kong.

For these photographs, Ahn works by gaining access to the building legitimately – it can take several months for the owners to give permission for the project – and setting a digital camera to take a large volume of high-speed images while she poses. These are then sifted to find a picture depicting Ahn looking unconcerned or distracted, captured in what she describes as “…a certain moment of time that did exist, but which we couldn’t perceive with the naked eye because it happened too fast.”

Ahn uses a harness for some first-person shots, and responds to criticism of the safety of the project simply by saying that she “always tries to be careful”.

I’m loving my most recent project . . . painting unicorns (based on the Lisa Frank character) and castles in a little girl’s ‘secret’ playroom! – yes, it’s quite small in there.

SUBTRACTIVE DRAWING

This was a subtractive drawing I did years ago. I drew from a still life that the teacher had put together. It’s only now, after I have experienced having to draw from terrible still lifes, that I really appreciate the effort put into making such a strange set up.

Geek of the Day: Seth Globepainter in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia has a similar urban plan or view with Jakarta in Indonesia. Everything looks really crowded, dusty and a lot of vehicles. The only difference recently is there are some new arts on the street made by the infamous street artist Seth Globepainter. Ah, lucky Cambodia! I hoped that he came to Jakarta instead. Anyway, his recent arts tell a story about Cambodia culture and social life. Think about girls with um… tattoos while she is praying, tribal patterns and some really scary religious masks (we have some too in Bali).

I really like them, but I always imagine that different artists especially the ones from other countries should also give a painting or an exotic-slash-original touches from his country to make people learn and understand different cultures. It’s great to paint the Cambodia cultures and origins, but I think it’s like giving a mirror to someone. You make them see their own reflections, the reflections that they really familiar with and don’t need stranger to point it out for them. Maybe Seth can paint a boy eating a hamburger or whatever he thinks very Western (or very him) and suitable for walls of Cambodia. I am sure people will like it and learn a lot from it.

‘Huge Woman Contemplating in the Desert’

by vincenttitus

One of the biggest paintings I’ve done to date got out. 70x100cm; 27,56×39,37in. Oil on canvas. The painting portrays a huge female figure contemplating. The figure stands for an open and constantly working mind, the size of it shows what it is capable in each of us while the female sex was chosen because of its ability to give ‘birth’. The desert is a symbol of non-conformity which ‘big’ mind’ tend to create, usually leaving ‘contemplator’ alone though.
