“There is nothing as mysterious as a fact clearly described. I photograph to see what something will look like photographed.”
- Garry Winogrand

I am studying what is, at this point, the most complete collection of Garry Winogrand’s photography. Considering that when he died he left upwards of 6,000 rolls of unprocessed film and several thousand unprinted proof sheets, the volume is far from definitive. But it is a deep look at perhaps the most important street photographer of our time. And some great reading as well. Destined to become a classic, click HERE to snag one before they are sold out.

This is a drawing of our dog Buffy, snoozing. She has lovely soft fur, very comforting for tired feet at the end of the day.

I don’t do photos, but I do make a drawing almost everyday. At the moment I make them on my iPad.

Really well done!

Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

This pic is of a pup I met at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. He was a sweet little fellow who had some sort of problem with his legs and was not walking normal. The imperfection faded off into insignificance in the face of his perfectly beautiful soul.
We have a lot of stray dogs in Sri Lanka.
The human toes belong to my friend. Slight imperfection if you care to notice.
Determined they both stand.
I am also a part of a stray dog rehoming project in Sri Lanka (just saying): www.facebook.com/adoptadoginsrilanka.
Keep changing the world, a foot at a time! :)

Florianópolis, Brazil

Last week, we arrived in Florianópolis — Floripa, as it’s referred to locally. Located in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, Floripa includes one main island with a group of smaller islands, a continental portion, and a whopping 42 beaches. Helloooo paradise.

My core

These people (and dog) are so good to indulge my passion.

I just let Stella do her thing here and did not intend to get her in the shot. The poor girl is frightened of the timer on my camera, I think that the beeps sound like her invisible fence. Further frightening her is me running away from the camera once I set the focus and timer.

On a warm summer morning, with Stanley snoozing beside me, I’m taking the time to read some of the wonderful, informative and creative blogs here on WordPress: something I’ve not had time to do of late.

On reading, I’ve remembered why I should take the time.

WordPress is a positive place, full of inspiration and a place that allows connection with so many  people from many different backgrounds and people who I don’t know at all. But on reading, I feel as if I do.

It’s refreshing somehow…

Reading Edith’s write up on A sense of place has me thinking about my own place and how we often don’t see what is around us on a daily basis. I know I don’t sometimes.

Maybe I simply need to open my eyes a little wider as it’s become too familiar. Something it never was during my flying years when I was somewhat of a transient resident, filtering in and out, without seeing.

I’m heading to Malaysia next week to backpack through the highlands with a dear friend.

Maybe on my return my eyes will be wider and I will take the time to see…

Nice picture, and we agree with you – WordPress is awesome!

Is School Failing My Son?

My wife sent me this article and asked me to read it when I had time.  I couldn’t wait until tomorrow once she gave me a quick taste of the content.  It’s a good read and like so many good reads, surely controversial.  Check it out when you get a chance.

It resonated with me.  So I shared it.

Kids and the lovely dog Nea (they did this, not us, for the record :>)

The fact is that my little girl can sit for hours upon hours upon hours upon hours upon hours (not kidding) and read, do homework, study, whatever.  It’s crazy.  She’s so focused.  We have to get her to “chill out.”  And when we do, she’s a blast, she has as much fun as any kid.  I love it.  But she has the amazing ability to focus too.

My son on the other hand just can’t sit still.  He has so much little boy energy and I love it.  He wants to go play at the fountain, kick the soccer ball, blow bubbles, run around, be crazy.  But when it’s homework time, he can do one problem and then has to get up and show mommy his new crazy dance move.  Then sit down, do one more.  Then get back up and jump around.  She has to make him sit down.

And what happens at school when a child talks too much, moves around in their chair too much, makes crazy looking faces to friends?  The penalty at ours is to miss recess.  Sheesh, that’s the one thing he needs.  Sure, he likes it.  So it makes sense, that’s a reasonable punishment (ahem, consequence, I mean, that’s what it’s called).  However, he needs it.  Let me say that again.  Little boys, on average, have a ton of energy they need to get out.  So skipping recess and being confined to a desk seems counter intuitive to me.  It’s only happened once (we have really good kids, thankfully), but I hope it won’t be a trend.

Regardless, the common theme here, I love it.  I love them.  I love my little nucleus here.  I don’t care if they are crazy!

Those kids are in great hands, Dad! Love that picture! :)

I work as a sled dog guide in the north of Sweden; 200km north of the arctic circle. Today, on my free day, I was walking my boyfriend’s dog and took a toe photo on one of the over 130 lakes in this area, at 18 below.

Feet of innocence

Feet in Thai culture are the dirty part of the body. Showing somebody a bottom of the foot means insult and that means loss of face – for both – you and the person you showed your feet. Even so small child, living in the mountain village, knows those rules. You, visiting Thailand, should remember about that too.

Didn’t know that.  Adorable photo!
