Not since we were kids have my brothers and I gotten together to take photos. And why not? Who says you have to have little kids as an excuse to capture the passing years? In the last ten years there isn’t a single shot of my whole family that’s not taken at night with a bad flash.
To address this issue I hired Nicole Seu from Studio 3511 photography. I wanted shots of us to be outdoors. Lucky for us Hawaii is full of splendid natural backdrops. However cliche, Lanikai seemed like the perfect backdrop. I’m really happy with the results, now, and I’m sure for years to come. Thank you Nicole!
Fantastic portrait!

When we went here: On daddy’s birthday on January 12th, 2013
We were here for 7 hours from 11 am. to 6 pm.
After a hard play in Wild Wild Wet, Rafael slept for 11 hours at night and another 3 hours at noon the following day. Plus I had to massage his hands and feet for several times because he said he was so tired, hahaha…..
My boy is getting bigger now…..he showed his courage which I never had seen before. I guess he is braver now because of his increasing age…..but on the other hand…..his parents are becoming more timid with the increasing of their age.
For more information, please visit their website at http://www.wildwildwet.com. Don’t forget that life jackets are provided for free in 4 different sizes in many places around this area, so it is highly recommended that children wear them.
Looks like Dad had a pretty good birthday!

These people (and dog) are so good to indulge my passion.
I just let Stella do her thing here and did not intend to get her in the shot. The poor girl is frightened of the timer on my camera, I think that the beeps sound like her invisible fence. Further frightening her is me running away from the camera once I set the focus and timer.
That dog is awesome!

My entire family was bathing in the sea and I was the only person left behind to take care of the stuff that they left behind. As beautiful the sea and the sky are, they can get pretty boring as well. So I decided to take a photograph with a different perspective and VOILA!
Love the perspective on this one! Great photo!

What can be more cool than having your parents as your travel buddies? Nothing, right? Well……..them paying for the trips, maybe, haha!
Anyway, I’m too happy to notice the damage the trips are making in my savings account and no, I’m not complaining. I wouldn’t be where I am had they not been the kind of parents who value good education, so much so that they really worked hard to give all four of us just that.
Ok, before I get too sentimental and start crying, reminisce with me as I look back and share some photos from our domestic and out-of-the- country trips.

This Labor Day weekend the six of us marked the official close of summer with a trip to the beach, complete with iPhone camera to document every moment of family togetherness. Never mind the sand that threatened to infest my very expensive piece of mobile technology: the moment needed to be recorded, dammit. Except baby Mo would have nothing to do with this photo-clicking frenzy. It became comical as she turned away from every camera angle in what seemed a defiant attempt to actually experience the moment — gleefully digging in the sand and retrieving ocean water in a bucket — rather than posing for posterity. I have the other kids trained to strike a pose at every “say cheese,” but not Mo (or, evidently, Daddy-O):
When you think about it, the whole idea of “capturing the moment” is a bit troubling. It’s often been said that this generation of children is the most photographed in history, with every milestone — big and minuscule — recorded by digital cameras. What impact does this have on how we experience family life and on how children experience their childhood? This drive to record must be especially strong at the end of summer, as parents anticipate our children moving up to another grade level in school and losing one more strand of childhood in the maturation process.
I have posted a lot so far on this blog about the spectacularization of celebrity moms, including how ridiculously fit Brooke Burke looks in a bikini after giving birth to four children. This pressure wasn’t lost on me this weekend as I debuted my post-baby bikini body at the beach for the first time (you’ll notice that there are no photographs of that sight, at least none I’ll share here). As I self-consciously frolicked on the beach while trying to hold my gut in, I felt great empathy for celebrity moms whose every beach frolick is studied by paparazzi eager for an unflattering shot of their exposed bodies.
But what I really thought about was those celebrity kids — the Suri Cruises of the tabloids — whose childhood is constantly interrupted by the prying lens of paparazzi photographers. Is this really so different from how we “capture” our own children’s moments and post them for the world to see?
I finally got Mo to look at the camera during our beach trip, but she hardly seemed happy about it. I think she just figured that if she gave me the money shot, I would finally leave her alone to play in peace:
Wonderful post!

“I went camping with my family and as usual I was the chronicler of adventure; this is the only photo taken that proves that I was there. “
Lovely shot!

“To answer the where have been question, I have been at the beach mostly–with horrible to spotty Internet connection. I have brought an assortment of children and grandchildren for snippets of shared splendor. Family time. “
Adorable!

“Left foot, left foot, right foot, right. Yes I know the Dr. Seuss classic, The foot book, mostly, if not entirely by heart. I have read it many times over during the course of the last 3 years, and at this point its been committed to permanent long-term memory, probably squishing out some other “less important” long term memories while doing so, such as who my second grade teacher was, or the what the square root of 81 is. I actually do not remember the first example, I do remember the latter, barely. Above you see my three-year old boys left foot, left foot, right foot, right, stepping on some old sea rock, at the Laguna Beach tide pools. It’s about 2pm, so this is all natural, bright and harsh daylight, but I thoroughly enjoy pictures of little feet, so I’m quite proud of this one. When I say little feet, I mean young feet, not midget feet, not that I have anything against midgets… sorry little people… no they’re not creepy at all, besides, don’t they have full-sized feet? So in summary, limited space in memory, kids books are repetitive, midgets rule, and mid-day sun is harsh. This was taken with my Nikon D80 and 60mm lens, no flash this time. “
Cute and great shot!
