The Art of Ahn Jun – New York City / South Korea

19 May

From Wikipedia

Ahn Jun (안준) is a South Korean photographer, known primarily for her Self-Portrait series of photographs taken from atop high buildings. She has worked extensively in the United States, particularly in New York, as well as South Korea.

Ahn’s work involves three major projects; Invisible Seascape, Float, and Self-Portrait.

Self-Portrait, the most prominent, is a series of photographs of Ahn on or near the top of skyscrapers, often leaning from a window or seated on a ledge. Some are taken from a first-person perspective, showing her legs dangling into space as she looks down. The project stemmed from a photograph of her feet she took while sitting on the edge of an apartment building while a student at Pratt, and has continued since then. The bulk of the photographs are from New York and Seoul, with some from Hong Kong.

For these photographs, Ahn works by gaining access to the building legitimately – it can take several months for the owners to give permission for the project – and setting a digital camera to take a large volume of high-speed images while she poses. These are then sifted to find a picture depicting Ahn looking unconcerned or distracted, captured in what she describes as “…a certain moment of time that did exist, but which we couldn’t perceive with the naked eye because it happened too fast.”

Ahn uses a harness for some first-person shots, and responds to criticism of the safety of the project simply by saying that she “always tries to be careful”.

8 Travel Resolutions for 2013

The first week of the year panned out typically in New York. The subway cars refilled with refreshed commuters heading back to work, the flow of things resumed, and every elliptical on the island of Manhattan seemed busied by a determined new sports club member.

In New York and beyond, people resolved to take steps towards their  visions of happiness: better health, more love, and more success.

I think resolutions are beautiful expressions, and can be made any time of year.

My resolutions for 2013 are:

1. I resolve to earn revenue as a travel blogger.

2. I resolve to become a yoga teacher and teach yoga abroad.

3. I resolve to get  TESOL certified and paid work teaching English abroad.

4. I resolve to become fluent in Spanish.

Maybe they are a bit ambitious. What do you think?

Here are four more totally realistic, attainable travel resolution ideas for you to consider:

5. Resolve to make travel a priority

If you’ve only just begun to entertain the thought of traveling, or if you’ve been putting it off for years, consider resolving to make travel a priority this year. Even if you have more specific travel goals, it is essential that you first make travel a major priority to achieve them.

Think about travel. Talk about travel. Write about travel. Read about travel. TRAVEL. The only way to guarantee something will get done is by bringing it to the foreground of your life.

6. Resolve to become an amazingly adventurous traveler.

If you’re like most Americans, then you might think of travel as an expensive, luxurious thing reserved for week-long family resort vacations or cruises. If you’re tired of this mindset holding you back from seeing the world, consider resolving to rethink the cost and image of travel.

Travel doesn’t have to be expensive or luxurious, and you’ll have more fun, meaningful experiences when it’s not. Start reading budget travel blogs and informing yourself about things like WWOOFing, HelpX, and working abroad. Then put aside your inhibitions, face your fear of the unknown, and go travel!

7.  Resolve to start saving up.

Even if you’re convinced that traveling in 2013 is impossible for you, you can at least resolve to focus energy on saving for travel this year. With twelve months ahead of us, consider how much you could save by putting away a little at a time.

  • Put away just $50 a month and save $600 towards a domestic flight or short, budget trip for next year.
  • Put away $100 a month and save $1200 towards an international flight or used van for a road trip next year.

(Note: My personal monthly savings target has been $1,000 a month since November and I have hit it every month so far! I plan to save $6,000 by July to go travel long-term.)

8. Resolve to travel for FREE

Saving up, budgeting and paying your way around the world is the most obvious way to make travel a reality, but it isn’t the only way. Traveling for free is possible. I’m inviting you to connect to an “anything is possible” attitude, rather than a “nothing’s really free” one.

There are so many ways to travel for free. Earn free flights with a miles credit card. Hitchhike. Stay for free by using Couchsurfing.com. Eat for free by exchanging work or dumpster diving. You can even earn money while traveling for free by finding work along the way or monetizing your travel blog.

Resolving to travel for free all year might be ambitious, but you can start small. Perhaps resolve to plan as short as one week or even weekend of free travel this year. Or maybe resolve to apply for work as an au-pair abroad or as a cruise ship employee. Accomplishing those baby steps will empower you to take even greater leaps in 2014.

Resolve it like you mean it!

If you do decide to adopt one of my resolution suggestions, I urge you to truly commit to it. Write it down large and visible and hang it where you look every day, like over your bed or desk. Frame it. Write a contract for yourself and sign it. Then sit down with a notebook and pen and figure out the smaller steps to achieving it. Start with January. What steps can you take this month towards filling your goal? Then break it down to this  week, and even as small as today.

Believe in yourself entirely, but without getting attached to one specific outcome. Remain open to endless possibilities and revising the goal down the road. If you end up taking a different path than you originally set out on, trust that the Universe has a greater plan for you.

Good luck and happy travels in 2013!

I was recently asked by some friends of mine in New York to illustrate a movie poster for their new film, “Flytrap.” I was purposefully given only a couple of vague trailers to draw inspiration from and this is the outcome.

Variations on “Is That a Violin????”

 by Lara St John

I have noticed, whilst travelling a few million miles hauling a violin, that carrying an oddly shaped case gives random folks a queer impetus to talk to you about what might be inside it.

Some people love to talk about what they do. I, however, to strangers, do not. Once I tell folks my profession, I often get asked about my day job. Also, a large number of people have a grandchild/godson/cousin who plays the violin/guitar/etc., and while I think it’s terrific that their relative is getting a musical education, I don’t necessarily want to hear all about it in an airport.

Others will tell you about themselves … how they took lessons for years. Inevitably and puzzlingly they will also impress upon you just how very bad they were. I once had a conversation with Josh Bell about this, and he is still perplexed when, after concerts, someone always tells him that they played violin once, “but not as good as you”. It made me wonder if people tell Michael Phelps about their waterwings or Annie Liebowitz about their Viewmasters. I have a hard time imagining meeting Nadia Comeneci and regaling her with stories of my cartwheel attempts as a kid, but somehow music seems to be a medium where failure can be a source of pride.

Over the years, I have experimented in how to avoid the situation entirely. At one point I thought the trick might be to look unapproachable, and asked an art student to paint something reptilian and badass on my case. It turned out like this:

boots, violin case, New York City and Curacao

New York City

It worked, in a way, since people stopped asking me about the contents. Instead, the question was usually: “Whoa, did you do that yourself, like, when you were, like, totally baked?” which is, admittedly, more interesting, but hardly conducive to my intended aloofness.

So I got a new case, and started working on zingy one-liners instead. Here’s a good one for the South, parts of the Midwest, and Texas:

“Is that a violin?”

“No, it’s a special case for my yoga mats.”

Folks will then think they know you to be a crystal-deodorant-wearing om-chanting vegan who doesn’t slap mosquitos …

Curacao

… and they will depart quickly. Do not try this one in California.

You can also do a question-answer, like this:

“What’s in the case?”

“What’s in your suitcase?”

This one can go over less than successfully.

Then I’m exhausted and jetlagged, and someone chortles (in an airport!!), the perennial favorite, “Is that a machine gun?? Huh huh huh,” and ignoring doesn’t work, I have taken to politely saying, with no hint of an accent: “I’m sorry, I don’t speak English.” Works every time.

My latest big hit:

“Is that a violin?”

“Nope, it’s cues”

“What?”

“Pool cues”

pool,devil,bar,New York City and Curacao

New York City

“Oh!” as they scurry away.

This one works because you are suddenly seen as a pool shark, and pool sharks have a certain reputation, which, should one’s progeny be emulating, one probably wouldn’t want to talk about.

Whereas folks tend to think of violinists like this:

violin, girl, pigtails,“Oh!” as they scurry away. This one works because you are suddenly seen as a pool shark, and pool sharks have a certain reputation, which, should one’s progeny be emulating, one probably wouldn’t want to talk about. Whereas folks tend to think of violinists like this:

New York City

Interestingly, this all seems to apply mostly to the good old US of A. Canadians tend to have so much respect for personal space (which includes property) that even if they wonder, they don’t ask. I might hazard a guess that, in Europe, they know what it is, so have no need to ask.

You may wonder why this is a pet peeve of string players, but think about it. If you are a vet, you don’t carry around a horse-shaped medical bag, scientists tend to leave their beakers at home, and mimes most likely talk to gate agents. Very few jobs are immediately apparent to assumption, require insane amounts of travel and have the added disadvantage of not being taken very seriously in some parts of the world. That adds up to a craving for anonymity, which, until someone invents a fold-up violin that fits into a briefcase, we won’t enjoy.

At least violinists are spared the size-related jokes that cellists have to deal with: “You taking that to the morgue?” “You got a body in there?” “That a sarcophagus?”

Sigh.

Great post! Lots of fun reading that. :)

Being that we are native New Yorkers, this week’s featured Man Candy is non other than The Naked Cowboy who’s graced us with his presence (panties, song and personality too) around the Times Square area since 1997.

So ladies, if you’re in town, don’t be shy, walk on over to The Naked Cowboy, and don’t be shocked if he asks you if you’d like to take a picture while caressing his cheeks (the back cheeks), and (surprise) in return, he’ll place his hand on yours. Don’t say I didn’t warn you :) but it’s all in good fun. He’s got a great sense of humor. PS: don’t forget to tip him kindly by feeding his guitar and don’t panic if your heart increases speed and suddenly your mouth goes dry. He does that to all the ladies.

MADONNA AND CHILD REST IN NEW YORK’S BOWERY

I came across a more unusual wall art or ‘graffiti’ in the gardens of St. Mark’s Church in The Bowery in the East Village of Manhattan. Madonna and Child seemingly resting along the wall of the church’s tranquil garden.

St. Mark’s Church is located at 131 East 10th Street, at the intersection of Stuyvesant Streets and 2nd Avenue. The Poetry Project hosts an annual New Year’s Day 11-hour reading that often features such downtown icons as musician Philip Glass and rock icon Patti Smith among its 100-plus participants.  The property has been the site of continuous Christian worship for more than three and a half centuries. It is New York’s oldest site of continuous religious practice and the church is the second-oldest church building in Manhattan after the Morris Jumel Mansion of 1766, in Harlem.

So, as the world’s probably heard, because of the approaching Hurricane Sandy, public transportation stopped running in New York City on Sunday at 7 p.m.  This morning when I woke up, I remembered that we’d forgotten to pick up sweet husband’s prescriptions!  I called the pharmacy at 9 a.m. and they informed me they were open until 1 p.m.  The pharmacy is down on 113 Street, and we live on 148 Street.  So, I prepared for a trek.

What to wear in wet weather?  In my opinion, as little as you can get away with.
