Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia

10 May

After our Anzac Day celebrations we hit the road and headed down to Airlie Beach for a couple of days. It was our first trip south and it was really fun. We stayed at a very family oriented caravan park and they had tons of activities going on and an awesome pool so we didn’t really even need to leave. But we did venture into town and out to the beach one afternoon and it was really nice. We didn’t swim in the ocean because there isn’t a net there and there’s actually only a small strip of sandy beach, but there is a huge swimming lagoon that the city has built right on the beach and we enjoyed that. Kind of ironic to build a swimming pool on the beach, but that’s NQ for you (North Queensland, that is).

It’s one I took for a Dance for Recovery project – using movement to explore feelings about the storm (cyclone yasi) before, after and during,  it’s in the documentary (see vimeo link in the signature) actually come to think of it, took a lot of feet photographs as it was a project to respect the privacy of the ‘face’ for the most part as some people didn’t want their faces in the video but understood the importance of documenting the project.

On a warm summer morning, with Stanley snoozing beside me, I’m taking the time to read some of the wonderful, informative and creative blogs here on WordPress: something I’ve not had time to do of late.

On reading, I’ve remembered why I should take the time.

WordPress is a positive place, full of inspiration and a place that allows connection with so many  people from many different backgrounds and people who I don’t know at all. But on reading, I feel as if I do.

It’s refreshing somehow…

Reading Edith’s write up on A sense of place has me thinking about my own place and how we often don’t see what is around us on a daily basis. I know I don’t sometimes.

Maybe I simply need to open my eyes a little wider as it’s become too familiar. Something it never was during my flying years when I was somewhat of a transient resident, filtering in and out, without seeing.

I’m heading to Malaysia next week to backpack through the highlands with a dear friend.

Maybe on my return my eyes will be wider and I will take the time to see…

Deadman’s Beach, North Stadbroke Island, Queensland, Australia

29 Dec

Stradbroke or Straddie as it’s called and Minjerribah, in the local Indigenous language, is in Moreton Bay and close to where I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.  It is one of my favourite places.  Often, when I travel, I find myself thinking “Why aren’t I just at Straddie?”  There are three small towns on the island with permanent communities but, of course, many love to go there for holidays.  At the right season, you can stand on the headland and watch whales as they migrate up and down the coast.

Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia

20 Dec

So my final four weeks in Australia have so far consisted of catching up with people for the last time before I leave and enjoying my last days with the fellow exchange students. We have camped, travelled, gone to the beach numerous times, shopped for Christmas souvenirs and most of all, just enjoyed ourselves. The great thing about exchange students is that it is so easy to get along. There is no judging, no grudges and no problems. We all accept each other and respect each other’s values. The connection that is made is something I can’t quite put into words but the feeling is amazing. If the relationships that I have made so far, are made again next year in Ecuador, I think my time over there is going to be great. The other exchange students in my town next year so far that I know ,consist of a French boy, an American girl and a German girl. The picture below is a photo taken by the Gold Coast Tourism company that spotted us while at Surfers Paradise. From the left, Jess is heading to Belgium next year, myself, Amandine from Belgium, Carlos – down the front from Ecuador, Jules from France and Martin from Hungary!    ~ Feliz Navidad~ ~Merry Christmas~

The Pelican Man of Cairns

We went here to do a Great Barrier Reef cruise but this pic, taken in Cairns, shows a young man who came every day to feed the pelicans who cavorted  on the mud flats. Whilst I was watching from the Esplanade, my hat blew off and a very kind gentleman went down to retrieve it for me, before one of the pelicans took a fancy to it.

Currumbin, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

30 Nov

Another smoking morning for surf here in Currumbin. Some local boys were ripping the head high waves in the cross-offshores and sunshine before that north-west kicked in strong and early. I imagine the northern end of the Gold Coast is pumping right now.. It was great to see some old faces jumping off the rock and getting barreled. Rock on fellas!

On another note .. there is a free-yoga session held every Tuesday morning in the park at flat-rock. Its run by the amazing Ali who also hosts a paid yoga class there on Thursdays. I went to this mornings class, heaved my way through the first yoga session in many years, felt amazing at the end and had to peel myself off the mat when finished.. What blew me away was as I went to put my thongs on, I saw the shadow the morning sun cast on my thong.. I think it’s a sign.

This picture was taken on the Upper Coomera River in the Great Sandy National Park in Queensland Australia.  We were taking a boat back to Noosa after camping for the weekend at Harry’s Hut campground.  We were a Motley Crew consisting of Australians, Canadians, British, German, French and Danish.

No one was bitten by snakes, spiders or sharks during the weekend.
