Couldn’t resist sending you this photo of my granddaughter’s toes! She said, “NeeNee – take a picture of my new shoes!” They were sandals, so her toes are visible! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. . .and remember, I am not in any way biased as to how adorable this perfect child is!

This shot shows the feet of two policewomen in South India. They are standing near a Temple, so their shoes are off. Note the toe rings and anklet!

Toe rings and anklets originated in India, I believe. Nice shot!

TOMS

If there’s one thing I love, it’s people who make a difference to help benefit others. And I love being able to take part in helping by supporting them. I just saw the Fall 2012 issue for TOMS and I LOVED what I saw.

TOMS is an organization dedicated to a “One for One” style. You buy a pair of shoes, someone less fortunate gets a pair of shoes. Buy a pair of sunglasses, and someone gets to finally see.

The styles are up to date for any age really. If I was 70 I would buy a pair of these. When I have children, I will be buying them TOMS shoes. I’ve actually been looking for a pair of winter heels and I found the exact ones I want from TOMS (I’m debating between black suede or grey desert wedges), for an affordable price (whoop whoop!), and my money goes to getting a child a pair of shoes (I get all tingly inside).

In my public speaking class, one of our assignments was a persuasive speech.  One girl did hers on buying a pair of TOMS shoes. She told us they had a day when you could walk around barefoot to help raise awareness and go through what kids in other countries go through. This day was in April last year. Do you have any idea how cold April is?! But she did it, and she said she would do it again. She said everywhere she went people noticed and by the end of the day her feet were completely black. She said they were filthy. That’s what kids all over the world go through on a day to day basis. I’m sure their feet are cut up and sore and some get sick from it.

They have a TOMS party you can host where you create your own shoe.

Why Aldo’s Instagram Campaign Started Out Great But Fell Apart In The End

 by Laura Stampler
As brands eagerly incorporate new forms of social media into their campaign strategies, some attempts succeed, some fail, and a lucky few do both.Tel Aviv creative shop Smoyz recently launched what it’s calling “The First Ever Instagram Street Banner” for Aldo. The shoe company’s promotion was simple and very cool conceptually.

A sign with a bell was placed on the routinely busy Rothschild Street with a prompt to: 1) Stand here on our welcome mat, 2) Take a picture of your shoes on Instagram, 3) Tag your pic #Aldo, 4) Click on the space bar and write your shoe size, and 5) Ring my bell.

In concept, this is a great idea. The bell was rung 457 times, over 500 pictures were uploaded, the photos were interacted with 798,38 times, and everyone got a new pair of shoes!

So what was the downside? The pictures.

Instagram / @yelenav22

There is a huge crop of almost 500 Instagram pictures that have different types of shoes tagged as Aldo. As was the case with @yelenav22, who posted the picture above, many people who partook in the promotion didn’t take followup photos of the new shoes or provide an explanation with why the photos were taken.

Usually when a brand launches an Instagram campaign, the point is to showcase beautiful images of its product to the world at large. This campaign showcased other brands’ shoes, and to an outside they are confusingly labeled as Aldo.

Not having a better idea for where to go to get today’s pictures, I decided to head back down to the Festival Mode et Design Montréal to catch the 12.45 show on the main stage on avenue McGill College.

Due to the strong sun light I decided to process all the images in monochrome and push the contrast and clarity to give the shots a bit of a grunge/street look. Since the show by Centre Eaton was downtown urban it was perhaps in keeping with the theme.

Great job!

“Feet of a woman on the bus. With a fancy nail polish job. And new peep toe pumps (in suede!).

My own feet. With a beat up do-it-yourself nail polish job. And old sandals (which I won’t get rid of just yet).

We’re both commuters on public transportation and on foot.  But I think she cares a little more about these things than I do. Still, I’ll give them a nod in my own “rough” way. “

edrevets writes, “My shoes in repose.

More info about my Italy trip:

Before leaving, it crossed my mind that I might not stand out as much in Italy since the people look more Caucasian and I would be wearing black shirts, which I heard the Italians are prone to do. I could not have begun to fathom the depths of my ignorance.

First of all, Italians (in the regions I visited) are a people who have adapted to the sun by developing more melanin in their skin, giving it a nice tan color. I, in contrast, am of Northern European descent where people are still actively debating whether or not the sun exists more than 3 months a year. I was the pale needle in a bronzed haystack.

Second of all, mimicking Italian fashion requires more than wearing a black shirt purchased at TJ Maxx. The first problem was the fact it was just a frilly black shirt and not a tight tank top. The second problem is that I paired it either with jeans or  business casual slacks (Old Navy) instead of shorts, skinny jeans, or leggings. My backpack was also problematic, since it indicated I was either an elementary school student or a dirty hippy backpacker. Yet despite all these flagrant violations of well-known fashion rules, the real deal breaker in my quest to blend in was my adventure sandals, also known as Chacos, that are so supportive the arch that can be seen from the moon. Only a sloppy tourist would dare be seen wearing something close to practical footwear, not including elderly people who have a prescription for their shoes and can’t fight off their nurse.

I proudly admit without shame that I am such a sloppy tourist, and I spent almost my entire European adventure in Chaco’s. These shoes, unlike humans, have never let me down. They lift me 1.5 inches above mysterious ground moisture. They keep my feet comfortable even after walking for hours on ancient Roman streets. They dry quickly should they become wet. They don’t bill me for therapy sessions. I am so dedicated to these shoes that I even wore them when I knew the occasion might call for something more formal, such a fancy dinner with my Italian host’s family. She donned an elegant coral dress and gold jewelry, her sister sparkled in a well-tailored black cocktail number and fancy black flats, and I stood out in my wrinkled purple sundress and adventure sandals. I’m almost certain a group of Italian men was mocking me on my way to the bathroom, but I harbor no regrets especially because of what followed.

After dinner, we visited a medieval city full of steep pathways and slippery cobblestone lanes and aimed to climb to the highest point in order see yet another breathtaking view of the Italian countryside. While the others were inching gingerly along in their chic but impractical footwear, I sprinted past them and left little puffs of adventure sandal dust in their faces. That night, I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt to myself and the entire world that fashion is never a substitute for functionality. A rib might break, and an ankle might roll, but my arches will forever remain supported. I don’t care what anyone else says; I love my adventure sandals.”

Haha … great story and sandals! :)

Linda writes, “I was reading last night and I came across this article that said “What NOT to Crochet”. The author was going on and on about how Barefoot Sandals were a joke. Well I personally think they add more personality to your feet. I mean come on, we wear jewelry on our ears, necks, bellies, noses, etc. To me these are merely another form of expression and or jewelry. I personally don’t wear shoes on the beach because you can never get rid of the sand on your feet, much less your shoes. So to wear these with your bathing suit is a nice way to dress up your feet xD.”

Great idea … barefoot sandals in crochet.  Very nice!

“IVORY COAST: APPROACHING RAINS THREATEN CHILDREN’S HEALTH

toemail, toes, feet, photography, Ivory Coast, West Africa, Save the Children

Audrey, 3, walks bare foot in the mud after heavy rains hit her camp.  Her mum said: “All our shoes were left behind in the house when we were attacked.  I don’t have any money to buy new ones.”

Thousands of children and families forced from their homes by ongoing fighting are at risk of potentially deadly diseases living in crowded camps without shelter or healthcare as the rainy season approaches. Help us reach them by supporting our appeal.

Five months after the disputed election that plunged the Ivory Coast into conflict, families who fled their homes to escape the fighting are still living and sleeping out in the open. They lack access to clean drinking water and healthcare, leaving them at high risk of disease.

“We have no house,” said Celestine, a mother of three living in a displacement camp in Duekoué, in the west of the country. “The rain comes and we’re sleeping outside. If it rains, it wakes you up and you can’t sleep. People have stomach infections, sicknesses… We can’t live like this.”

Healthcare supplies are also running dangerously low in the country as health centres and pharmacies have been looted. We have sent planes stocked with life-saving shelter, medical supplies and equipment into the west of the country where 27,000 people are living in squalid camps following the recent violence.”

In many countries, and in many ways, wonderful work you’re doing!

Originally SW was gonna help me take my moral project photos at Taman Jaya which is a few minutes walk from CHS, i.e.: sweeping the leaves, picking up rubbish, dumping bags of rubbish – you CHS students get the drift.

And we stopped at the swings and benches of the playground. I snapped a few photos of her feet. One made it to deviantART! Now I’m just taking old photos and processing them with a new perspective. The above two are RAW files. I simply love the control it gives me to do whatever with the photo without damaging the original files. O colourful photos, long time no see.”

Great shots!
