Statue – Dallas, Texas

15 Oct

I took this photo at the Dallas Arboretum.

I am coming back to photography after a 50 year hiatus caused by a family tragedy. I am so enjoying taking photos again. I went to the Dallas Arboretum twice a week last spring to photograph flowers and statues.

Barefoot In The Grass – McKinney, Texas

30 Jun

As a child growing up in McKinney, Texas I walked everywhere in my bare feet.  I just loved the feel of the cool, green grass as it hugged my toes and made them wiggle with glee.

Although this isn’t issue so much in Texas as it is in Arizona, being that this was enacted in Arizona, it shows how delicate taking care of an issue can be. Illegal immigration is a very real thing for border states, and although perhaps these measures being taken were seen to fix a “problem”, they enforce racial profiling. Recently with UT at Austin there was a similar racial profiling that stuck with me. A “game” was set out to search for students who volunteered as pretend illegal aliens, and to bring them back to certain students for prizes. As a young Hispanic woman, this deeply worries me and really surprises me to see how the rest of my country may perceive me for my heritage. I am a young american woman, but sometimes I myself feel alienated for my customs, looks, or faith. Walk it off, and continuing forward is the best thing we can do to show our pride in our heritage.

Here, Melissa and two fellows yogis are doing some flying with AcroYoga at a retreat in Texas!  Truly gorgeous.  Thank you for sharing, Melissa, and I look forward to receiving many more submissions from this dedicated yogi!

Please check out her site, chalk-full of information, resources, and retreats: www.melissasmithyoga.com

Remember: the possibilities are endless when one body does yoga…and even more infinite when bodies unite to do yoga together!

My group didn’t laugh at me too hard when they heard my idea of hiking barefoot.

The first step out of the car was in sandals, but I kicked them off and threw them in the back of the car. Raw untrained feet don’t feel good when they hit a cold gravel parking lot. Trying to reconnect to the earth via bare souls doesn’t really work on concrete and gravel, but after a few grueling steps, I made it to the trail.

The trail was smooth and it was pretty easy to dodge the gravel and grit. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t feel some mystical connection to the Earth or my ancestors (even my dad used to walk barefoot). What I did was focus on a patch of trail in front of me trying to avoid all the gravel. The trail is mostly clay and the gravel is less rocky than it is full of dirt clods. I know this because I could hardly lift my head to look around because when I did, invariably found something nice and sharp.

Every time I head out on a hike I wish I knew more about geology and rock formation. It seems crazy to describe the place as little more than packed clay. I know there’s more to it, but to my feet, that’s what the whole area felt like.

After hiking three miles, my feet were a bit more sensitive, and down hill really made this apparent. Stepping down hill on to gravel or small dirt clods, isn’t wonderful. To add to the problem, I was less attentive on the way back. I kept finding stickers that had fallen onto the trail from the little bushes on the side.

I’m going to keep trying to go barefoot. I want to learn how to barefoot run, and I think starting on trails will be easier than concrete, but as the temperatures warm up in the spring, I hope I can get better at running barefoot.

Our other two friends drew in the sand when they saw a footprint.

March of the Tin Soldiers

A big share of my surrealistic bent comes from the influence of Walt Disney on my childhood. Lady and the Tramp, Babes in Toyland, the Junglebook… Disney made me dance and dream.

Fish Flops – Houston, Texas

2 Jan

She launched her business two years ago, but Houston teenager Madison Robinson has yet to face something most new entrepreneurs do: rejection. Every store buyer she has approached has placed an order for her Fish Flops for Kids shoe brand.

Robinson came up with the idea for her sea-creature-adorned flip-flops with battery-operated lights when she was just 8, living at the beach in Galveston Island, Tex. Her dad Dan, a former banker turned t-shirt designer, helped her turn her drawings into a product and get samples made. More than 30 stores placed orders the first time they exhibited at a trade show, so he hired an overseas manufacturer and started shipping in May 2011.

Launched with “friends and family” financing, the enterprise is already profitable, the elder Robinson says. The shoes now sell online, in various retail boutiques, and at 60 Nordstrom stores nationwide for around $20 a pair. They’re also coming soon to FlipFlopShops.com, and Macy’s buyers in New York recently asked Madison to design a line for women. More than 60,000 pairs sold in 2012, making for retail sales of at least $1.2 million. That’s not all Fish Flops’ income; the Robinsons sell wholesale. But Dan Robinson says it’s safe to say that his daughter, who is about to complete 9th grade, has already socked away enough profits to cover her college tuition.

The 15-year-old draws all of her own designs and chooses color combinations digitally, but has also learned how to pack shipments, stock the warehouse, explain her pricing, host a tradeshow booth, and make a sales pitch.

She has also mastered social media marketing: Through Tweeting from @FishFlops she got the young daughter of Entertainment Tonight host Nancy O’Dell to wear the shoes, and captured the attention of HSN fitness personality Tony Little. (Tweeting is also how she got this reporter interested in her story.)

But to get into Nordstrom, Robinson employed an old-fashioned sales technique. “I wrote a letter to the buyers,” she told a Houston Fox reporter. “I didn’t think I would get in, but I did.”

Love it! :)
