Gendarmenmarkt Bore

This  statue is a true representation of how I felt about the Gendarmenmarkt. This is supposed to be one of the best Christmas markets in Berlin and is the only one to charge a fee for entry. Maybe this fee is what attracts people, “this must be the best you have to pay to get in”, well actually no, I think its by far the worst (or wurst :)  ). There was very little room to maneuver as it was far too crowded and the queues to stalls were huge, it was just terrible.  If anyone is going to the Berlin markets just head to the grounds of Alexanderplatz beneath the TV tower, it is free, there is loads of room and the whole experience is just far more enjoyable*.

The Alexander Platz Market isn’t better or worse, it’s just different. Gendarmmarkt is more than a Xmas market, it’s a culturally significant event, very high scale; many of Germany’s best musicians(classical) play there each year, even the entire Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and the quality of the merchandise is impeccable. It’s a matter of individual taste, but for Berlin, this is in a league of it’s own.

We, the people of Berlin, do not agree. Alex is East, Gndrmmrkt is French(it was the French sector); the two are worlds apart, financially and socially. Alex is the Bronx, or NJ, while the Gendarmarie is downtown Manhatten or Upper East Side, but Berliners love the diversity of all their districts. This sounds like a case of ‘Al Bundy’ in a gourmet restaurant screaming ‘the portions are too small’ and asking for ketchup to douse his 5*dinner. There is one thing Berliners despise more than anything else: tourists, specially the ones who are no wiser when they leave. Don’t call it a comeback, Mama said knock out out. We’re done here.

Yeah I was disappointing in this Christmas Market also even without taking into consideration the entrance fee. I have been to several Christmas Markets and the best are the ones in Cologne IMO.
